NHS versus Teachers

Has drakeford offered Teachers a larger pay rise than nurses.

There was a stat out there that Nurses are 20% worse off than they were 10 years ago whilst teachers are 10% worse off (taking inflation into account).

If that is true I would be instructing the nursing union to tell drakeford to stick his rise up his arris
 
A quick Google reveals that:

- Nurses were offered an initial 4 to 5% rise, then they added an extra 3% (1.5% pay increase and 1.5% one off payment of a worker's salary).
- Teachers have been offered an initial 5% rise, now they've added 3% (same structure as above).

So the quick and easy answer to your question is no.

Edit: Oh and I don't know if you meant it this way, but titling this thread 'NHS versus teachers' is exactly the kind of divide and conquer strategy that the Tory government loves to employ.

Last paragraph is spot on. The OP should re-title the thread with something less controversial, along the lines of:

Decent ordinary working people v dispicable Tory scum

So 5% + 3% (teachers offer) is the same as 4 to 5 (supposedly 4.5) + 3% (Nurses offer) is the same. Perhaps Sunak was right about folk needing to study Maths for longer.

I'm not scummy tory by the way.

The topic is a headline and meant to highlight how bad the nurses offer is, especially when you put the last ten years in to context.

I am a massive fan of nurses, I even married one.

In fairness he was correct, you have fallen into the Tory trap, by playing one set of working class people against another working class set.

I understand what you are saying but this is the Welsh Assembly that made the offer to both sets of workers not the tory govt. I am merely pointing out that the powers that be (Drakeford) offered more to the teachers by going for 5%. He should have gone to the NHS nurses and said 5%. My wife was apoplectic when she saw that offer. As I said before, nurses are 20% worse off than they were 10 years ago while teachers are 10% worse off. Both bad statistics but seeing the offer my wife was going to accept the offer as she knows the budget is finite and then Drakeford offered the other group more.

So it's possibly .5% lower, hardly a massive difference is it? Plus potentially it is 5% and so exactly the same. Not sure it warranted the maths jibe, but no worries.

Both pay offers are shit in my opinion, but as others have pointed out, pitting them against each other only helps deflect blame from the people we should be angry at. I imagine you'd feel the same way about the teachers offer if you were married to a teacher. It's a bad situation all round.

The devil is in the detail.
The lower bands get a larger award but not so great when you go up the pay scale.

My wife had her offer written down and it was 1400 across all bands, which actually equates to only 2.63% for her - plus the 3% (of which 1.5% is consolidated) So that actually equates to a total year on year pay rise of only 4.13%.
They didn't get a rise last year (2021/22) as the Welsh govt only gave a rise to Band 5 and below because they didn't accept the 3% and ended with nothing (that will teach them).

The Welsh government have offered teachers 5% plus 1.5% consolidated plus 1.5% non consolidated so equating to a 6.5% year on year pay rise. That is 2.37% more than my wife's offer.

The welsh government said they it was their final offer as they could not afford any more and then they offered the teachers more.

This is not pitting the professions against each other it is comparing Nurses versus teachers awards. I want to know why the Welsh government offered many nurses less than the teacher equivalents.

If I married a teacher and the pay offers were the other way around damn right there would be an annoyance. The only difference would be that at least she would be home to make my tea.

Although I would say that it's completely correct to me that people higher on the scale get a lower percentage pay rise than those lower on the scale. I have no idea of your financial circumstances and wouldn't assume anything, but I would have to think that an extra £1400 is going to make a more significant impact for those lower on the pay scale.

I agree in principle with your comments about how those lower on the scale should benefit with a higher remuneration and the extra £1400 may have a significant impact for those personnel.
My wife mutters something about "what's the point of all her training and specialisation" but as I often hark on about redistribution of income in society i have to remain balanced.
This takes me back to my angst with the Welsh assembly giving Teachers across all bands 5 + 3% when they said that the nurses offer was final and they did not have any more money. That is not fair offer for the nursing profession and perhaps they need to be consistent and do the same to higher salaried teachers or give the nurses the same as teachers.
This is the first time in over a hundred years the RCN have gone on strike and those on band 5 may well vote to accept the offer because those staff need the money now.
