Season 20/21: Swansea City v Bristol City Match Thread

Swansea City v Bristol City
The Liberty Stadium, Swansea
The SKYBET Championship
Saturday February 27 2021 3pm Kick Off

Image

We may not be convincing at the moment but we are still picking up points and keeping pace at the top of the table after Ben Cabango's midweek winner against Coventry gave us a 13th game unbeaten in the league at the Liberty and and 8th win overall in our last 11 league outings.

We have the chance to build on that again on Saturday as we welcome visitors from just over the bridge to the Liberty when Bristol City arrive in Swansea after securing their own midweek win - a first win after 6 straight league defeats.

It was 1-1 when the two sides met at Ashton Gate earlier in the season but we are now separated by 17 points and need to extend that on the weekend as we continue our drive towards automatic promotion knowing that the end of season result is still completely in our hands thanks to our two games in hand.

As ever on Planet Swans we have for you some of the most comprehensive pre-match coverage in our matchday thread that will bring you all we need to know over the next few days as well as all the chat during the match together with every post match follow up you would wish to read (and maybe even more!)

My team for Bristol would be:

Woodman, Roberts, Cabango Guehi, Latibeaudiere (if Bennett isn’t fit), Manning, Grimes, Smith, Fulton, Hourihane, Lowe.

Another one already? It's relentless.

I get nervous about these teams at the bottom of the form table.

The goals they scored at Boro were counter attack against a high line, so we should be well placed to stop any tomfoolery like that. I'm expecting same again. Lets hope we can sneak a goal from somewhere. That's the way we are going to play whatever hot air is pumped out in public. No one can argue with the results so far.

Just seen they have Nigel Pearson in as manager now, praying they won’t have the bounce against us.

RYAN BENNETT SET TO MISS ROBINS CLASH, BUT SWANS HOPEFUL ON KYLE NAUGHTON

Source: Swansea Official Site

Swansea City will be without Ryan Bennett for Saturday’s clash with Bristol City as the defender recovers from the calf injury he picked up at Huddersfield.

But head coach Steve Cooper is hopeful of having Kyle Naughton available after the centre-back had to go off during the second half of the win over Coventry in midweek.

And captain Matt Grimes is fit and available after being able to play on after hurting his shoulder during the first half against the Sky Blues.

“Ryan is going to be out for a couple of weeks with his calf,” said Cooper, as he provided a team news update for the weekend fixture.

“With Kyle, we are not too sure, fingers crossed it is not too serious. He played on with it for a while, and it got to the point where it was best to take him off.

“Matt Grimes is fine, I was a bit worried with how he went down, but it was something he shook off quickly.

“Apart from those we are good to go.”

Saturday's Ref Is Keith Stroud

Keith Stroud will take charge of his third Swans game of the season on Saturday when he takes centre stage for the game against Bristol City.

Stroud was in charge of the 1-1 draw with Coventry as well as our 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.

This will be his 22nd Championship appearance of the season with his previous 21 games so far having seen him brandish 57 yellow cards and just the solitary red for Buendina of Norwich, significant for the Swans as it meant he missed their trip to the Liberty Stadium.

Stroud was in charge of the first leg of our play off semi final last season when he awarded us a penalty (which Ayew missed) and also sent off Brentford's Rico Henry - a decision that was later on overturned on appeal although it was a decision that Cooper agreed with at the time "You look at the Jake Bidwell one against Bristol City earlier on in the season. I don’t think you can if you compare it to that and if you do what you do you’re endorsing dangerous and reckless challenges" he said after the game.

"There’s a lot of contention. You saw some in the Premier League too. The fact is it was 50:50 and there’s no way it can be overturned."

Cooper blasted Stroud as well last season after failing to show a second yellow card to Reading's Lucas Boye at the Liberty - saying after the game: "I politely spoke with the ref at half-time. I've come across him before. He's a really experienced referee and a decent guy but I think he knew he let himself down a bit.

"I asked him and he's obviously going to have his excuses and reasons, and the fourth official's reaction as well, they knew they probably weren't at their best."

Stroud will be assisted by Jonathan Hunt and Sam Lewis whilst Scott Tallis is the fourth official

Clearly the two things are not exclusive of each other but would people be happier on Saturday night with

a 1-0 win secured off the back of a performance akin to the Forest and Coventry game or
a 2-1 defeat where we saw some free flowing football and a great attacking performance

As I said clearly not exclusive and there should be no reason why both aren't possible but I think the question is relevant

Been running this place since 2001, still gives me a headache now!
