Paterson tells Swansea – I don’t want to play?

Swans midfielder Jamie Paterson was absent from the Huddersfield matchday squad due to a disagreement over the way his contract renewal has been handled.

This is according to the usually reliable Athletic website, but contradicts Russell Martin’s reasoning for his omission yesterday. Martin stated he was yet to fully recover from his bout of Covid but would return for the Preston game next Saturday.

The Swans boss confirmed last week that Paterson’s contract had been extended but rumours started to surface last night that all was not well between him and the club.

The news could mean that Paterson will be on his way out of the club this January, with the player wanting a significantly better salary than the one which has been triggered on his contract extension.

The latest update will come as a real blow to Martin, who made the former Bristol City man his first signing for the Swans back in August.

Paterson has enjoyed arguably the best form of his career at Swansea, netting eight times since arriving on a free transfer when he had precious little else in terms of offers from elsewhere.

When a player omits himself from playing, it usually signals the end of their career at that club. Whether that is the end of ‘Pato’s’ short Swansea City career will soon be discovered.

  1. If he ainโ€™t happy why sign it, he was in the sally rhubarbs six months ago if he donโ€™t want to represent our club then Iโ€™m sorry he has to go. Even though heโ€™s a class player nobodies bigger than the club

  2. Some of these football playerrs are a disgrace .. try working for the NHS 12.5 hr night shifts with massive responsibility for lives and earning pathetic money .. and not geting meal breaks as the wards are always short !!!!

  3. I think itโ€™s fair enough if the contract extension was triggered early and the details werenโ€™t sorted out. This sounds like panic from the club to keep the player without thinking through the consequences.
