Liberty pitch work continues – diggers move in

It was a much criticised playing surface last season and a forced relay of the pitch had to take place around the turn of the year with fans describing it as the worst surface in the football league at times.

The remedial work carried out earlier this year was a temporary reprieve for a surface that for many years appeared to be one of the best around but has certainly gone downhill in recent years with some of the problems blamed last season on the short turnaround between football seasons.

Steve Cooper admitted after the 2-0 win over Barnsley at the end of December that the pitch was not helping “I know it’s been a talking point for a number of weeks now and it’s not been easy,” he said at the time.

“But we’ve got to play football on it and we’ve been winning here – and that’s the most important thing.

“I know it will be a little bit different next time we come here which will be intriguing to see. But we’ve dealt with the conditions really well and played football when we can.”

As the picture below shows (taken yesterday) work is continuing on the pitch now during the close season.

  1. It does not help things when you have rugby player on it to and the mess they make when they have scrums and the players dig thyer feet in to get leverage it takes a good pitch to stand up to all that.
