Jenkins Denies Pennock Allegations

Jenkins was contacted by the Western Mail whilst on holiday in Majorca (not on club expenses before anyone suggests it!) and he has categorically denied that any contract was offered to Pennock. "I am not aware Tony Pennock had been promised a one-year contract. As far as I know, nobody at Swansea had promised him that sort of deal – and I am the only person at the club who gives out contracts." whilst Pennock is still insistent that he was offered the contract "Kevin Reeves agreed a one-year contract with me just over two weeks ago. And on Monday, in the referee’s changing room at the Vetch, I shook hands with Brian over it." the two parties told the Western Mail.

It’s an interesting stand off at this moment in time. It seems odd that Pennock would believe he was offered a contract but at the same time you would assume that Jenkins would know about it if he had been offered one. However, if you also remember a few weeks back it was quoted in the papers that Brian Flynn had been given his budget for the season and it was up to him how he actually spent this budget?

I am also slightly bemused by another quote from Jenkins "We wanted him to provide cover for the goalkeeper and for that sort of role we do not think a long-term contract is suitable." I would definitely draw a question over this one. My view is that we need a back up keeper at the club on a permanent basis. I accept that we can renew short term contracts when they are due but at the same time you have to wonder what sort of cover we will attract on a three-month basis? I am slightly loathed to disagree with the player movement this summer but it doesn’t seem a sound move to secure one of the most important back up players we will have on a short term contract?

I am sure that somewhere there must be a reason for this thinking but maybe someone would like to tell me what that is because I can’t see it at this moment in time.

The one thing we have to look at though is Pennock has gone. I can’t say I was ever a massive fan of the idea of him providing cover and it is good to see that Jenkins wants a replacement keeper to act as cover "We will now be looking for a ‘keeper to replace Tony. We’ve got a few weeks left to sign someone" he said in this morning’s papers.

The squad is still bare in places and I hope that it is just not a keeper that we are looking at and unless there are players, such as Connolly, who need to prove fitness then I would urge us to look at year contracts a a minimum for the missing links in the squad. If we are convinced that the players we are signing are the right ones, and so far they have been, then surely that is the least that we should be doing.

It’s been an interesting summer so far and looks like there are still more things that will happen in the next four weeks although I would hazard a guess that any new faces may be with us before the squad heads off to Holland in a fortnight?
